Pink and dark grey clay figurine of the god Bes, with the headdress broken off. He sports a large phallus. Created from a one piece mould, the reverse side is unworked. |
Provenance |
Purchased as a memento by John Growder who drilled for oil in Egypt for eight years, from around 1923. Bes, a dwarf god, was a household protector, becoming responsible, throughout ancient Egyptian history, for such varied tasks as killing snakes, fighting off evil spirits, watching after children, and aiding women in labour by fighting off evil spirits. He often had a lion-like beard and a protruding tongue, and wears a plumed headdress. |
