Description |
A Christmas candle box issued by Imperial Oil. The top of the box is painted green, with the Imperial logo, two lit candles, and holly as decoration. "Christmas Candles" is written in the middle of the box, with the candles on either side, the holly and logo above. The candles were made in Canada as per the top of the box. Around the sides of the box is holly, with the Imperial logo in the middle of each side. One side tells us there are 36 candles. Inside the box are the candles, some gently used and some never used. They are an assortment of blue, white, green, and orange in colour. |
Provenance |
In 1880, sixteen southwestern Ontario refiners form The Imperial Oil Company in London, Ontario, to find, produce and distribute petroleum products in Canada. In 1883 Imperial operations move to Petrolia, Ontario after lightning strikes the London refinery. In need of expansion capital, majority interest of Imperial sold to the Standard Oil group in the United States in 1898. ExxonMobil, a descendent of Standard Oil, still owns 69.6 percent of our shares. In 1899 Imperial takes over Standard's Canadian assets and moves its head office and operations to Sarnia, Ontario. The name Esso is derived from the S and O from Standard Oil. |
