Provenance |
This bright red strawberry basket was made by Spencer Lunham in 2023. The unique design and beautiful colours are one of his trademarks. Lunham is a third generation traditional basket maker from Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. In the 1990s, his Uncle Rocky taught him everything he needed to know about gathering, pounding, and splitting splint. At that time, he earned a living selling splint to elders across southwestern Ontario. He comes from a family of basket makers, including his grandmother Gladys Lunham. With the help of his Aunt Faye, he began the journey to learn basket making. In recent years, Lunham recognizes the important of keeping the tradition alive amongst his people and has been teaching classes. |
