Description |
Oil painting on canvas with a wooden stretcher. The painting depicts a log cabin or workshop located on a clearing of land in a forested area. The building was the shop of Isaac J. Hastings, a sleigh maker and later a wagon maker. The painting is signed and dated in the lower right corner, which reads "J.R. Hastings, 8-10-32". The back of the painting includes additional information about the business and the Hastings family. |

Information on the back in pencil: I.J. Hastings first shop: built on Concession 9, Enniskillen Township. Construction in the autumn of 1887. Made first sleighs and cant hooks. Mr. Alex Kelly bought the first set of sleighs (log). Shops owned by Isaac J. Hastings: 1st - In Enniskillen, 1887. 2nd - Built on father's farm on the 12th line of Brooke Township in 1890 (frame shop). 3rd - Built brick factory in Watford, Ontario in 1898. Watford Hastings Wagon Co. founded in 1907. 4th - About 1910 bought the old Woolen Mills (Sam Loucks, property) and worked there until 1933. Moved in Spring 1933 back to brick factory. John R. Hastings was the brother of Isaac J. Hastings. |
