Description |
Small wood keg used to store black powder for explosives. It is a light brown/yellow wood closed end barrel with slightly tapered sides and a plug in one end. It is constructed with 12 staves held by 5 wood rings on each end. No markings on the keg can be seen. A partial paper tag is affixed to the bottom wood rings stating the item catalogue number, powder keg and donor name. The label is missing that would have identified it to be from the Hamilton Powder Works, but a round lighter area is noticeable where the paper label would have been. The explosive powder would have been used to blast stumps and rocks and in the oil industry, possibly in the wells to aid production. |
