Provenance |
This bank note was produced in 1918. The inscription on the front of the bill translates to "Under guarantee of the districts of Bona City. Bonn - country and the Siegkreis. Valid as a means of payment in these circles, the voucher loses its validity three months after public announcement". The bill was in the possession of Robert Henry Dunn (1888 - 1960), it appears as though it may have been a souvenir from the war. Robert Dunn worked as a farmer in the Mandaumin area until he enlisted in the First World War on February 25th, 1918. Dunn joined the Canadian Engineers that supported the military efforts by building tunnels and bridges, as well as laying and removing demolition charges. He participated in a high-risk operation during the Hundred Days Offensive between August and November 1918. The engineering corps successful installed several portable bridges across the Canal du Nord so that artillery could pass over the riverbed. As a result, the army was able t o continue on to capture the city of Cambrai and send the German army into full retreat. |
