Description |
Brown leather flight bag. The bag is rectangular in shape and contains four compartments. The top of the bag folds over, creating a flap closure which also includes a handle for carrying. There are two long leather straps with a buckle that wrap around the bag and connect in the center. The straps are held in place using two sets of leather strips on the front and back of the bag along with two additional sets on the top flap. On the front of the bag, there is a gold metal plate with a small lock that would have connected to the top of the bag. The interior of the bag has a second flap that covers the larger compartment at the back of the bag. This compartment includes two short pieces of leather with two snap button closures that secure the flap in place. There are three additional accordion style compartments. The top edge of the second compartment has a small loop to hold a pen or pencil. |
Provenance |
This flight bag belonged to Lew Gleeson (1896 - 1981). Lew was born in Petrolia and worked for almost 30 years as a columnist for the Petrolia Advertiser-Topic. He joined the Royal Air Force on April 1st, 1918 and became an instructor at a Texas air base. Miraculously, Gleeson survived three crashes. In the last crash, he broke 11 bones and fractured skull. He was discharged a few months later due to his injuries. |
