Brass tray and candle snuffer. a) Brass tray is oblong and narrower in the middle. There is an embossed leaf design along the edge. The edge is raised and the middle is indented. b) Brass candle snuffer looks like a pair of scissors with a compartment on one blade to capture the burnt wick. |
Provenance |
Patented November 24, 1857. To prevent the wick of a wax candle from dimming, flickering, and smoking, most households owned a candle snuffer. The candlesnuffer would snip the carbon from the wick and extinguish the candle safely with no soot or wax on the surroundings from blowing it out. The burnt wick would be neatly captured in the compartment on the blade. |
