Provenance |
This item was recovered by the commercial diver, Wayne Brusate during the excavation of the wreck of the Steamer Regina in 1986 under a permit from the State of Michigan, Department of Natural Resources. The Regina was discovered in Lake Huron near Port Sanilac, Michigan on July 1st, 1986 by Wayne Brusate, of Commercial Diving & Marine Services, Inc. The Regina was carrying a mixed cargo of merchandise and was lost with all members of the crew during the Great Storm of 1913. This item came to the Lambton Heritage Museum from the Great Lakes Maritime Institute. Aurelius Stone Hinds (1884 - 1929). During the 1860s, he worked as a clerk for two different drugstores in the Portland area. In the nineteenth century it was common practice for pharmacists to make their own creams for sale using recipes gleaned from pharmacy journals or experimentation. Part of the reason for the local production was the problem of spoilage. In 1870, Aurelius went into business for himself after buying a drug store under Preble House on Congress Street, and it was there that he developed his most notable product, known as "Hinds’ Honey and Almond Cream". The cream was thin and had a lotion consistency which was used to treat various skin problems such as poison ivy, stings |
