Description |
Cream coloured wedding dress. The dress features a high lace collar trimmed with a narrow piece of white satin and adorned with silver beadwork separated by French knots carried out using pink thread. The sleeves are three quarter length and comprised of white mesh fabric adorned with lace detailing and a ruffled trim. The bodice of the dress includes a triangular piece of cream coloured satin covered with a simple eyelet design. This section of the dress is trimmed with intricate silver beadwork resembling a zig-zag formation that continues towards the back of the dress. In the middle of the dress, there is a prominent floral shaped design embellished with silver beads and small pearls. The bottom of the design also includes a beaded fringe. The waistline of the dress is defined by a horizontal piece of satin folded to create pleats. The skirt is comprised of cream coloured satin with a simple eyelet design along with two vertical seams down the front adorned with evenly spaced clear beads. A series of weights have been added to the insides of the hem. The back of the dress includes a several metal hook and eye closures. The interior of the dress is lined with a white mesh fabric. |

Richard and Margaret Wehlann settled in Alderborough Township (Elgin County) after they immigrated to Canada. They relocated to Dawn-Euphemia, where they owned a brickyard in Cairo. Their home on Main Street is featured in numerous postcards from the early 1900s. Richard was also a Dawn Township councilor. He died in 1910. Margaret (Moody) Clements died in 1924. Their daughter, Christina Jean Wehlann (1888 - 1952), married Fred Clements (1890 - 1977) on July 11, 1913, at St. George's Church in Sarnia. They had two children, Lloyd (1914) and Phyllis (1921). This wedding dress belonged to Christina Wehlann and was donated to the Lambton Heritage Museum by her grandson. |
