Description |
Pair of black leather gaiters. The gaiters are rectangular in shape with a curved edge at the top and a slightly asymmetrical edge near the bottom. The top edge is reinforced with a second piece of leather that functions as a strap. On one of the gaiters (a), the strap includes a small metal buckle on the left hand side. There are two additional strips of leather on the right hand side that have been evenly spaced apart along with two metal buckles positioned parallel to the straps. The other gaiter (b) is identical in design with straps located on the left hand side while the buckles are located on the right. The underside of the gaiters remains unfinished. |
Provenance |
These objects are believed to be gaiters which are used as protective coverings worn around the calf and ankle. Similar to puttees, these accessories provided additional insulation and protected against cold weather, dust, debris and water. During the War, they were commonly worn by military personnel as part of their uniform and offered much needed protection in the trenches. |
