Description |
Round, metal, silver token, worth ten cents for merchandise at the G.H. Thompson General Store in Oil Springs, Ontario. The tokens were used as credit for items customers brought into the store for trade, such as milk, butter, or eggs from their farm. |
Provenance |
The tokens were used at the G.W. Thompson General Store in Oil Springs. George (Shorty) purchased the store in 1904 and operated a general store until 1947 when he sold the grocery department. He continued selling dry goods, shoes, rubbers, wallpaper, paint, crockery, and glassware until 1959. The building was originally in the east end of the village during the first oil boom in 1862, but was moved to the downtown location in 1880 by George Yates and was used as a general store until 1896. The Oil Springs Chronicle was printed in this building from 1862 until about 1914. From 1896 until about 1903, James Marshall used it as a hardware store. |
