Description |
A dug out style chair cut from a single section of basswood. The chair is similar in design to the ones made in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The chair has a drawer under the seat made from two pieces of plank. The original colour was oxblood and has since been finished with a dark brown stain. |

The donor was the grandson of Archie McLeish. This chair was carved from a single section of basswood by Middlesex County resident Archibald McLeish. Known locally as "Red Archie," he lived in West William Twp. from 1849 to 1931 and was the grandfather of the donor. Red Archie is the eldest child of Alexander and Mary Galbraith who were married in 1847 in East Williams Twp. Archie married Mary McCubbin in the 1870s and farmed 425 acres along the Ausable River. Their eldest daughter married Hugh McColl. |
