Description |
Large, canvas military bag. The bag is cylindrical in shape and comprised of a cream coloured canvas material. There is a large opening at the top that includes several holes with metal grommets around the edge that would have supported a rope drawstring. On the front of the bag, there is a handwritten inscription that reads "J. Wise. H.M.C.S. V-65983". The reverse side of the bag features a second inscription that reads "J.Wise" using large block letters. |

This canvas bag belonged to John Cecil Wise (1924 - 2013). John was born August 14, 1924 in Sarnia. His mother was Margaret Wise. He worked as a mechanic until enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War. According to his Certificate of Service, Wise was 5' 7" tall, with brown hair and hazel eyes. After enlisting on July 9, 1943, he served as a stoker, eventually completing additional training in 1944. Wise served on ships including the HMCS Hunter, York, Stadacona, Peregrine, and Prevost. He was also on the Scotian from July 27, 1944 - December 5, 1945. During this time he completed his training and moved from the role of stoker to shipwright. By January 9th, 1946, he was demobilized. |
