Description |
Five gallon galvanized steel fuel can. It has tall straight ribbed sides with a slanted top that has a wide neck. There is a pull-out lid with attached handle across the lid. A steel handle for carrying is attached at brackets on either side on the slanted part. It is stamped Canadian Oil Co.s Ltd horizontally on the ribbed front. A little bit of liquid can be seen inside at the bottom. It was originally used in the thirties by Morwood Ashton for delivering the gas to customers. This is before pumps were put on trucks to pump the gas. This type of can was used later for motor oil for bulk delivery. |

The donor's father, Marwood M. Ashton worked for an oil company in St. Thomas called Thayer in the late 20s and early 30s. About 1935 he started his own business which he named Red Rose Gas and Oil. He delivered gas and oil to customers in the St. Thomas and Aylmer area. The donor worked for him in his younger years. The donor's father was taken to court over the name of the company by White Rose. Marwood Ashton won. The donor wasn't sure of the significance of the Red Rose name. Marwood sold his company to City Service which became part of BP. Donor's father passed away in 1980. |
