Description |
Time capsule (a) containing three oil samples (b - g) and pages from a directory (h - i). a) Tall, rectangular metal box. The top of the box appears to have been originally welded shut but has since been pried open with one corner still attached. The box seems to have originally been made of copper but has since turned mostly black with traces of a green tarnish on the front and inside. b - g) Three small glass vials of oil with a cork stopper. The bottles held oil from the Imperial Oil Company but the label has turned black and is illegible. h - k) Two groups of pages from a 1921 Directory. The front page reads "Chatham-Sarnia and District Official Telephone Directory. February 1921". The second group of pages are in very poor condition (i). |

The Sarnia Collegiate Institute & Technical School (S.C.I.T.S.), has a rich history stretching back to 1922. In 2016, S.C.I.T.S. was consolidated with St. Clair Secondary School (S.C.S.S.) to form the Great Lakes Secondary School. During this time, a committee was established to review the artifacts and memorabilia at the old school building. Some items were sent to the new Great Lakes Secondary School, while others were distributed to the Lambton County Archives and Lambton Heritage Museum. This item was part of a large donation containing over 150 items. According to a March 4th, 2018 Sarnia Journal article, the capsule included: "A history of city schools dating back as far as 1838; bottles of oil manufactured by Imperial Oil, the cities largest employer; silver and copper coins; and a 1921 civic directory with key facts added about Sarnia and its assets and liabilities. Also added to the cornerstone was a history of the First Nations people written in Ojibwa by Francis W. Jacobs, Chief from 1901-1907, along with an English translation." |
