Hand carved male Ruddy Duck decoy. The duck has been carved in a sitting position, the head facing towards the right and the tail feathers standing upright. The breast of the duck is white while the sides and back are painted a rustic brown. The sides have subtle black markings. The edges of the wings and tail feathers are painted black. The tail feathers stand upright and fan out, white paint has been used to highlight the detailing on the feathers. Additional details have been carved into the wings, tail, and body of the duck to define the feathers. The underside of the tail is white with black markings painted into a rainbow pattern. The back of the ducks head is brown and the neck and underside of the head are painted white. The top of the head is painted black with a light grey beak with a black tip. The duck is carved in three pieces, the head and tail have been attached separately using screw from the bottom and side to secure them in place. The bottom of the duck remains unpainted and includes the Maker's Mark. |
Provenance |
This decoy was carved by Jerry Meloche who was known to many as "Peanut". Melodize was a carpenter who spent countless hours hand carving his decoys after his long day at work building houses. No matter what Jerry worked on, it had to be perfect. Jerry lived and worked in Port Lambton and the Wallaceburg area. He hunted ducks and geese in the St. Clair River, Mitchell Bay and Lake St. Clair. He was often accompanied by S. Conliffe, Sneak Boat Builder & Decoy Carver, H. Thompson, M. Johnson, B. Carey and D. Simandl, Decoy Carver. |
