Provenance |
Norman James Alexander MacDonald-Lockhart (1884 - 1974) was born in Dunnville, Haldimand and lived in the St. Catherines area. For 30 years, he worked as the Secretary Treasurer and was part-owner of Jones-Lockhart Ltd. He was also the Chairman of the St. Catherines Board of Education and fought City Council for a $3,000 grant towards the repairing of city schools which led him to run for Mayor. On January 16th, 1935, he came to office and was then elected as Lincoln County member of Parliament for the Progressive Conservatives. He held this position for 14 years. In addition to his political career, Lockhart was part of the Independent Order of Oddfellows (I.O.O.F.). St, Catherines is home to the second oldest Oddfellows' Lodge in Ontario. He was a member of the Empire Lodge No. 87, which had the largest unit membership of 740 members. He served as the Grand Warden and later, the Grand Master from 1930 - 1931. The Grand Master was the highest rank within the I.O.O.F., he was the first to be appointed in over 40 years. This cane is engraved with the name "St. Clair Dist. No. 4" which coincides with a Lodge located in Petrolia. Occasionally, members from different districts would visit other Lodges. It is presumed that the Empire Lodge No.87 had visited the Petrolia Lodge in 1931. Given his high status within the I.O.O.F., it is reasonable to assume that the cane was awarded to him in order to mark the occasion. |
