Visual Gas Pump |
Description |
Clear vision gasoline pump with a White Rose globe at the top. It is a tall cylindrical piece of equipment for dispensing gasoline. The bottom half is a cream colour painted metal, a long yellow handle is near the bottom. A black rubber hose attaches near the top of the metal base and is hooked by the nozzle on the other end on a bracket on the opposite side. There is a clear glass reservoir above the metal base which is calibrated in gallons to show how much gasoline can be dispensed. There is a red metal band below the reservoir and at the base. There is a cream colour painted metal hood above the reservoir with a light bulb hanging down. On top of the hood is the glass globe with White Rose in red letters arched around a white rose. A very rusty plaque with a sliding knob is attached beside the hose out-take. It is embossed with "To Tank" on the left side and "To Car" on the right side. There is another larger rusty plaque on the backside but cannot discern any writing on it. The early gravity fed gas pumps with a clear cylinder were called visible gas pumps. This style gasoline dispenser used a hand operated pump to move gasoline from the storage tank into the visible cylinder at the top of the pump. A valve on the pump would then be opened to allow gravity to feed gasoline into the vehicle's gas tank. |
Provenance |
This gas pump was used at a White Rose gas station. In 1901 the Canadian Oil Refining Company was formed in Petrolia, Ontario. By 1908 it was bought and renamed, Canadian Oil Companies Ltd. A competition was held for the design of the White Rose logo depicting the actual flower. In 1962 the company was bought by Shell Canada. |
