Description |
A small cylindrical glass bottle filled with damper oil. The oil is brown in colour and the bottle has a cork stopper. Label on the front identifies it as Valvata 79 oil made by Shell Oil Co. for Negretti and Zambra Ltd. London, England. |
Provenance |
Collected by donor's family member who hauled oil to receiving stations and also worked in the oil fields. Shell Oil Co. Valvata 79 has a pour-point of 10 degrees F and is recommended when room temperature may at times be abnormally low. It is used for speed reducers and similar gears. Negretti and Zambra was established in 1850 by Henry Negretti and Joseph Zambra who had formed a partnership. Their skill was immediately apparent when, exhibiting at the 1851 Great Exhibition at Hyde Park, they were the only English instrument makers to receive a prize medal for meteorological instruments, and were appointed instrument makers to the queen, Greenwich observatory, and the British Meteorological Society.
