Colourful crazy quilt. The piecing varies in size and includes curvy and straight cuts. Some blocks are hand pieced while others use embroidery. The quilt has been finished with cotton batting along with a brown polished cotton backing. |
Provenance |
This quilt was hand embroidered and hand quilted by Sarah Jane "Jennie" (nee Farmer) Tyler (1870-1930), the wife of John Hart Tyler. Together they owned and operated the post office and general store in Oakdale until 1908. The quilt is referred to as a Crazy Quilt but was also known as a "Diagonal Line" quilt. When looking at this quilt, several questions come to mind. What is the significance of the dates "1894" and "April 14"? Was this a friendship quilt? Did several people piece and embellish these blocks? The participants' initials "EB", "MB", and "KL" are clues that lead one to think that this may be the case. The embroidery varies from block to block. However, when the blocks were completed, it was assembled and finished by one person. |
