Dark silver colour three dimensional lead figurine toy of a clown. The clown is smiling, and stands on a square base. |
Provenance |
Lead figurines were made revolutionary in 1893 when Britain created the hollow casting technique with molten lead for toy soldiers. Lead was popular in toys and paint because it is highly durable, anti-corrosive, and would increase drying/setting times. Operation of lead toys began to dwindle in the 1950s due to the realization of the hazardous effects of lead, and almost all operation stopped in the mid 1960s. The production of lead dominant goods was outright banned in the United States in 1978. |
