Description |
White, black and silver microscope (a) with a glass lens (b) and plastic cover (c). The base of the microscope is rectangular in shape with rounded sides, two silver knobs on the left hand side and a round glass lens (b) near the front. There is a short metal arm with four adjustable knobs, extends upwards from the base to support a piece of metal containing two separate eyepieces. One juts out vertically from the top and includes a black plastic cap while a second pair protrudes outwards at an angle. Below the eyepieces, there is a cylindrical objective lens that tapers in side towards a small opening at the bottom which points downward at the glass plate. There is a short, black coil that connects the metal arm to the base of the microscope along with a long, black power cord and a clear, plastic cover (c). The cover includes an inscription that reads "MEIJU TECHNO" written using black lettering. On the lefthand side of the inscription, there is an illustration depicting a flag comprised of two transparent triangles and two black triangles. |
Provenance |
This microscope belonged to local botanist Dorothy Tiedje who collected various specimens from around Lambton County between the 1960s to the early 2000s. She graduated from Western University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Physics in 1945. She started her career at Dow Chemical in Sarnia. She then spent a year as a physics instructor at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. But her heart lay with the natural environment. Tiedje loved living things and developed an interest in botany. She joined the Field Botanists of Ontario and Lambton Wildlife groups. Tiedje began her collection of botanical specimens in about 1964. After collecting in the field, Tiedje pressed and dried the samples. She mounted them on paper sheets with the species name, collection date, and location details. Tiedje's husband, John, was an important part of her work. He helped find specimens and photograph plants in the field. He also co-authored the report Vascular Plants of Lambton County, Ontario with his wife. |
