Description |
Black leather bag (a) containing a variety of connector pipes (b - f). a) Black, leather traveling salesman bag. The bag is rectangular in shape and resembles a medicine bag. The bag includes a small leather tag at the top of the bag and a leather handle. The bag also features a hinged opening that is reinforced with metal and includes a small, brass sliding mechanism at the top on the left and right hand side to open the case as well as a brass lock in the center. The interior has two pockets on the one side and a long pocket on the opposite side. The bottom of the bag includes six individually spaced brass rivets. b) Brown, clay sewer pipe fitting that has been inserted into a thick metal slip-seal die cast joint at the base of the clay fitting. c) Cross sectional diagram of two brown clap pipe fittings that have been sealed together using what appears to be black rubber or perhaps a slip-seal solvent. The diagram features two clay fittings, one is in the shape of a circular tube that fits into another tube with a pronounced curved edge. The exterior of the fitting has the word "A.V.P. Co. Lisbon, Ohio" stamped into the side. d) Thick, metal fitting in a circular shape, the bottom has been fitting with a flat circular ring. e) Large clay fitting. The base is a flat, circular metal fitting with a metal bar through the center that has been attached to the base of the clay fixture. The clay fitting is one piece with concave edge that tapers into a flat sided ring. f) Metal fitting that is circular in shape with a raised lip that features a metal bar that has been soldered into place and used as a handle. The exterior of the fitting has vertical notches along the circumference. |

The connectors were designed and patented by James Clayton Johnson for the Clay Sewer Pipe Association Inc. company. The pipe connectors were for sewers, septic tanks and water lines. James was born in Sarnia, Ontario and moved to Michigan after marriage. By 1951, he had moved back to Sarnia. He was a banker by trade and obtained his patent around the 1930s. |
