Description |
Brass artillery shell that has been fashioned into a vase. There is a ridge around the top rim with a series of indented dots adorning the exterior. |
Provenance |
This vase was made from an artillery shell during the First World War. This type of artwork is typically known as "Trench Art' and can be made by soldiers, civilians or prisoners of war. As the personal use of government property was illegal, many trench artists did not sign their work which resulted in numerous pieces of anonymous art. The soldiers viewed trench art as mementoes of service, and brought many pieces back after the war, where they remained in family homes for decades. |
