Description |
White mustache cup (a) and saucer (b). The cup features a wide gold band along the top edge of cup followed by a thin gold line with a scroll design underneath. Written on the side of the cup using a gold script are the words "Marquis of Lorne 1878". On the inside of the cup, there is a small mustache shaped shelf attached to the side. The saucer is white with a small gold decals around the outer rim. |
Provenance |
The name on the cup refers to Marquis of Lorne who was the Governor General of Canada and Queen Victoria's son-in-law. These tea cups were popular in the late nineteenth century when moustaches were highly fashionable on men. During this time, men styled their mustaches using wax. A porcelain guard in the lip of the cup protected the moustache from steam and tea stains, allowing men to drink tea and keep their facial hair tidy. |
