Photo print of a map titled, "Canadian Journal New Series Vol. VIII page 185. / Sketch showing the position of the flowing Wells at Enniskillen". Map is divided into sections which are labelled 15 to 21 across. At right side reads, "Flowing Wells / A. The first discovered flowing well known as Shaw's Well / discharge estimated at 35000 Brls / B. Extreme N. Westerly Well / C. Extreme Easterly Well / G. Extreme Southerly Well / D. The only flowing Well North of Black Creek. / E. & F. The only Wells at present flowing / K. Proposed Test Well". At the bottom right reads, "The dotted line is the Limit within which all the flowing Wells have been found. The figures indicate the depth under the rock surface. The Ground is from 40 to 80 feet above the generally level rock surface". Compass at left side. Gum beds indicated. At left reads, "The first Oil Well in Canada was dug on first gum bed by J. M. Williams in 1957, Williams drilled 100' into the rock in 1859". Oil Springs Village indicated. Bottom left corner reads, "W. C. Chewett & Co. Lith Toronto" written in type. Photo is black and white. Attached to bottom edge is a second piece of photo paper which reads, "This map of the Oil Springs oil field was made by Sir Sanford Fleming in 1862. It was included in a lecture given by this famous Canadian scientist at the Canadian Institute, in 1863", written in type. Piece is attached with adhesive. Back reads, "Map of Oil Springs Oil fields, 1862" and "Duplicates of prints already in the Sarnia Library Collection" written in pencil. Label applied in lower right corner, which reads, "Douglas Paisley / M. Photog., M.P.A. / Historical Photographic Collection of Lambton County / Photographic Consulting / Date May 6, 1997 / Neg# H102-89" written in blue type. |
