Description |
S.S. Germanic of Northern Navigation Co. The Head Office of the Northern Navigation Co. was moved from Collingwood to Sarnia in 1910. In 1899 the Great Northern Transit Company built the Germanic at Collingwood. She was the last of a long line of wooden vessels constructed there. She was 184.0 feet long with a gross tonnage of 1014 tons. Her regular route was to the Manitoulin and Sault Ste. Marie, but in the tourist months of July and August, shr went to Mackinac as well. She burned at Collingwood, April 5, 1917. |
Provenance |
In 1947, the late H.F Holland reached out to the community to source and collect photographs of former teams and sporting events to be displayed in exhibition at the new Sarnia Arena. Mr. Holland was ultimately turned down for the display. However, he continued to gather materials with the encouragement and assistance of local commercial photographer Doug Paisley, who re-photographed the old pictures so the originals could be returned to their owners. The collection grew to include people, buildings, events and more, dating back to the mid 1800's across the County. For some of these original images, this may be the only remaining documentation of them. |
