Description |
Black and white photograph of a man, Walter (Duffy) Atkin, with a wheelbarrow loaded with identical brown paper wrapped packages in front of S.G. Jackson Hardware store in Oil Springs. They are possibly care packages for soldiers in WWII. |
Provenance |
The hardware was built in 1880 by Van Tuyl and Fairbank and they ran the business from 1880 to 1884. Samuel Gray Jackson managed the hardware from 1884 until he took ownership in 1925 and ran the business until 1951 as S.G. Jackson Hardware. Upon Jackson's death, Laura Jewel and Walter (Duffy) Atkin acquired the business and operated it as the Atkin and Jewel Hardware from 1951 to 1972. Both Laura and Duffy previously worked for Jackson. Photos most likely belonged to Isabel Miller, a past resident of Oil Springs. Photos were dropped off at the Oil Springs Municipal office by an unknown person. |
