Provenance |
Written on the back in black ink "Dec. 1937" and in blue ink "Amos ready to go with the milk wagon" Donor file has written note from Amos Smith: "During the depression in the fall of 1927, I canvassed Oil Springs to see about starting a milk delivery. Those with Oil Property kept a cow or two because they had a team of horses to haul the oil to the receiving station on the railroad. They said they would be glad to get rid of the cows. Then they could get someone to feed the horses and could get away. We started in the spring of 1928. Had the cows tested. We lowered the milk to 8 cents per quart and 6 cents a pint in 1932, so received 6 cents a qt in the store because many did not have refrigerators. When the law said it had to be pasteurized my bro Jack and wife Gladys put it in and took over. We sold for 9 ½ years had to milk by hand because the govt. wouldn't let us have electricity. Amos Smith" |
