Description |
Local volunteers in Fenian Raid, 1866. (L-R)Standing: Ensign Clark, Bugler Deveral, Lieut. Holland, Lieut. Taylor, Lieut. Farrell, Sgt. Major Hudson, Ensign Atkinson, Lieut. Frank, Lieut. Curling, Ensign Wilson, Ensign Leighton, Ensign McKellar. Seated: Adjutant Matheson, Capt. Pollard, Lt. Col. Richardson, Capt. Davis. In November 1865, the Government stationed at Sarnia the Toronto Rifle Company, the Woodstock Company of Infantry and the newly formed Sarnia Company of Infantry under Capt. F. Davis. In 1866, there was a more serious call to arms because of the Fenians, and the 27th Lambton Regiment was formed on September 14th, 1866, with Capt. (now Lieut.-Colonel) Davis as its Commanding Officer. This historic photograph is doubly valuable because all the men are identified; it may have been taken before the formation of the 27th Lambton Regiment. The names do not exactly correspond with those in the first list of officers in the 27th. The title "St. Clair Borderers" was given to the regiment in 1872, together with its motto, "Semper paratur et fidelis". The full title was then the 27th Battalion of Infantry, St. Clair Borderers. The garrison battery at Sarnia continued as an independent battery for a number of years, but in 1885, it became No. 7 Company, 27th Battalion. In 1900, the designation was changed to 27th Lambton Regiment, St. Clair Borderers. Ensign McKellar was from No. 1 Coy, Ensign Leighton, Lieut. Curling, Capt. Pollard and Lieut. Taylor from No.2 Coy, Ensign Wilson and Lieut. Holland from No. 7 Coy, Capt. Davis, Lieut. Farrell and Ensign Clark from No. 8 Coy, and Lieut. Frank and Ensign Atkinson from No. 9 Coy. (Information from history of Lambton Regiment and E.A. Pardee, grandson of Ensign Antrobus C. Clark). |
Provenance |
In 1947, the late H.F Holland reached out to the community to source and collect photographs of former teams and sporting events to be displayed in exhibition at the new Sarnia Arena. Mr. Holland was ultimately turned down for the display. However, he continued to gather materials with the encouragement and assistance of local commercial photographer Doug Paisley, who re-photographed the old pictures so the originals could be returned to their owners. The collection grew to include people, buildings, events and more, dating back to the mid 1800's across the County. For some of these original images, this may be the only remaining documentation of them. |
