Letter written June 12, 1916 on Provincial police Office letterhead to Peter Growder by the Provincial Constable of British Columbia, J.M. Hutchings, informing him that his brother Alex has drowned on the night of June 7. This letter talks about the details of the death of Alex Growder and how he had drowned while attempting to board a sloop from a skiff which capsized. He was on this skiff with another man who survived the capsizing and was rushed to the hospital while search crews continued to look for the body of Alex. Alex was found four days later and the police have ruled his death an accidental drowning. This letter also states that the constable was a friend of Alex and that the funeral will be held in Northern British Columbia the next day, so that Alex's friends and loved ones in that area can pay their respects to him. A transcription of this record is available in the media file and the accession folder. Alex Growder was born in the Petrolia area and went to British Columbia looking for work. |
