Part a: Cover is light brown fabric, with "C.D." written in the upper center in black marker. The inside features a rainbow swirled pattern forming four vertical lines. On the first page, there is red plastic with raised white lettering reading, "From 1903 to 1925 this ledger was the property of Van Tuyl & Fairbank Oil Springs - 1925 to 1951 S.G. Jackson - 1951 to 1972 Atkin & Jewell Hardware Limited." The entire book is filled with handwriting and follows the same format. The pages are white with pink lines forming a chart. Written at the top, in black ink, is the year in the left corner and "J.H. Fairbank James Property %." Inside the chart, from left to right, is the date, the products sold, and the price. At the bottom of each page under the price category is the total. There are 906 numbered pages. The years range from 1903 to 1908 but these are not in order. Part b: Red covered booklet with darker red vertical stripe near the spine. In the upper center, written in black marker, is "C.D." When the book is opened, on the right hand side, there are tabs featuring each letter of the alphabet (including a tab for "Mc"). The pages are white and at the top, the vowels are written between two pages in black type (A, E and I appear on the left pages, while "O, U and Y appear on the right). The pages are lined vertically with pink lines, with the vowels heading each column. On some pages, there are names handwritten in black ink, with numbers to the right. Not all of the pages have handwriting. This is potentially the index to the ledger. |
